Title: Trials of the Soul
Fandom: Bleach
Characters: Kira Izuru, Wabisuke
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: A lot of angst, hurting Izuru
Disclaimer: Bleach belongs to Tite Kubo and related companies, I just like to play with his characters
Summary: “What are you doing?!” His voice was more angry than it was afraid; Wabisuke would be certain to change that before the night was through.
Author's notes: I love Wabisuke. I really do. He's creepy, and scary, and can be bad for Izuru, but I love him anyway. Mm, but really... he is good for Izuru, just not in immediately obvious ways. And he's fun to write (I know, I enjoy angst and being mean to the characters far too much).

“What are you doing?!” His voice was more angry than it was afraid; Wabisuke would be certain to change that before the night was through.

Kira Izuru had been so excited when he first heard that voice, rushing headlong into training with his zanpakuto without first finding out what that training entailed.

He was finding out now.

“Let me go!” The blonde struggled against the chains that Wabisuke, while looking so skeletal, had had no trouble locking him into. The spirit gave him a look heavy with derision and distaste as he stepped back, regarding him silently as he fought.

He had potential, certainly, or else Wabisuke would never have even begun this, but he had to learn.

Izuru’s breath came in shorter and shorter gasps as panic rose through him, making him throw his full weight against the heavy chains to try and escape. They didn’t give even an inch. He gave this man before him as angry a look as he could manage, helped somewhat by the nameless spirit’s refusal to even talk to him.

“I-”

“You must learn.” The threatening whisper halted Izuru’s movements for a moment, eyes wider than usual finding the one of the spirit’s that he could see. He shivered at the dead stare he received, shrinking back from its cold anger.

“Learn… what?” Wabisuke held his gaze for a moment longer, before simply turning and walking unhurriedly back into the shadows he came from. “Wait! Don’t-” Izuru cut himself off, not liking the way his voice echoed back to him, unanswered - how big was this place?

He closed his eyes for a moment, letting the chains hold him up as he concentrated on getting himself back under control. Sensei always said that calm in frightening situations was the most important thing; if you had control over yourself, you had control over the situation. But even when he was able to breathe evenly and control the flash of panic that opening his eyes brought, Izuru still didn’t know what he was supposed to do.

“What I am supposed to be learning? How to escape?” he asked softly, not surprised when he didn’t get an answer. Izuru tugged tentatively on the chains again before pulling hard, slumping back against the wall with a sigh when they didn’t move. The wall was cold against his back, and Izuru regretted sleeping without his top, but really he could have had no idea that he was going to be pulled into this strange world in his sleep.

His wrists were beside his head, but he was able to twist enough that he could perform a hadou on the chains. Izuru cried out, a shockwave of pain running through his body as the black iron absorbed the kidou’s energy. He felt hopelessness rising in him again; if he couldn’t break them with physical strength or kidou, how was he supposed to get out?

It was hours later when Wabisuke returned, having watched every move Izuru made. The boy could no longer support his own weight, his legs weak from repeated attempts to pull free and, as he grew more desperate and more frenzied, further attempts to break the chains with kidou. Izuru was slumped forward, no longer noticing the burn in his wrists from the iron digging into his skin, a sheen of sweat covering his back and his breath coming in harsh gasps. He was exhausted, and barely noticed Wabisuke’s return.

“Have you learned?” Izuru slowly raised his head, his eyes wanting to slide shut but meeting the spirit’s eyes with a defeated gaze.

“I can’t escape.” he said hoarsely, thinking that this was the lesson he was meant to learn.

“There is one option left to you.” Wabisuke stated flatly, moving his hand so that the keys he carried jangled softly. Izuru’s eyes snapped to them, exhaling softly as he realised what Wabisuke wanted.

“Please free me. I can’t- I can’t do it.” he whispered brokenly.

“Apologise for your folly.” Izuru’s eyes widened slightly as realisation hit him. Colour burned in his cheeks, but Izuru could not bring himself to argue; he hurt, he was tired, and he wanted to be let free.

“I apologise for- for being…” he started, though he wasn’t entirely sure what the spirit wanted to hear; an apology for not asking for help sooner?

“Cocky enough to order me.” Wabisuke said, sounding neither angry nor forgiving. He watched as Izuru’s mouth moved silently, repeating the words to himself, not smiling as another would as the blonde finally fully understood.

“For being cocky enough to order you.” Izuru murmured dutifully, now knowing why the man had done this. “For thinking I could escape- without you.” he added after a moment, his voice even quieter.

Wabisuke held his gaze until Izuru dropped it, looking to the ground, the spirit only then moving forward to unlock the chains. Izuru fell heavily to his knees, crying out softly; the stone floor was no more forgiving than the chains had been.

The spirit roughly grabbed his chin, forcing Izuru to look up into that hard gaze, terror rising in him the longer he held it.

“My name is Wabisuke. You will earn your right to be my master.”
